Sumo Wrestling Tournament Winner - Congrats to Sekiwake Tamawashi!

Congratulations to Sekiwake Tamawashi for winning his first Makuuchi (Top-Division) Tournament.  First entering sumo in 2004, he has slowly climbed the ranks and now will make his Ozeki run next tournament.  If he can secure 12 or 13 wins with some upsets of the Yokozuna and/or Ozeki during the next tournament, he has a great shot.  Tamawashi also won the Shukun-sho (Outstanding Performance Prize) and Kanto-sho (Fighting Spirit Prize).

Here is Tamawashi's 2019 BBM Sumo Wrestling Card.

Fellow Sekiwake Takakeisho, who is also making his Ozeki run, was the runner-up champion and won the Gino-sho (Technique Prize) with his solid sumo technique.  Unfortunately, Takakeisho was a few wins short of securing his Ozeki rank, but will try again in March.  Here is Takakeisho's 2019 BBM Sumo Wrestling Card.

Rounding out the special prizes is Komusubi Mitakeumi who secured the Shukun-sho (Outstanding Performance Prize) by overcoming an injury early on in the tournament, but coming back and securing a winning record.  Here is Mitakeumi's 2019 BBM Sumo Wrestling Card.

Up-and-Comer Juryo Shimanoumi won the Juryo Championship with an impressive 13-2 record.

There you have it.  Did anyone else catch any of the action this tournament?  With the poor performance of the Yokozuna and Ozeki, we might be seeing a changing of the guard with the old on their way out and the new on their way in!

  1. As I was working through the score sheet I kept seeing Shimanoumi stacking wins! I’m excited to see him come up through the ranks.
Mitakeumi was impressive and showed so much heart fighting through obvious pain.
Takakeisho also did a good job. I thought he had the wins for the promotion but then realized I was wrong. I think it was wishful thinking lol. Tamawashi looked great! I’m super proud for him. He also looks so happy all the time. It’s a big difference between him and Takakeisho who has a very stoic face. All in all I think it was a good Basho. I really wish the higher ranks either get better or hang it up. Tochinoshin knows you can make a comeback if you have to. Hopefully March they will all feel good.

    1. This was an impressive tournament and Hakuho dropping out was surprising. Wishing Tochinoshin good luck in the next tournament.

    1. Takakeisho is a little over 5’6”. He looks so compact when he fights and is great to watch.
