1956 Sumo Wrestling Bookmarks

Recently, I stumbled across these somewhat unusual "cards" in the form of bookmarks.  Actually, they are bookmarks, but still a fun paper collectible.  I have only ever seen these four cards alluding to how rare they are.  I usually do an occasional search for sumo bookmarks and just happened to time it right for these to be at auction.  It looks like these were issued in uncut sheet that kids would have to cut out and were likely issued in kids magazines which were really popular in the 1950s. I love the black look on these.....pretty sharp looking which is why I picked them up.  Notice the uncut hole at the top where the bookmark string would go in...I'm wondering if the string came within the magazine as well.  Oh well, what do you think?  Anyone else collect oddball sports ephemera?

Have a great weekend!!!

  1. I'm not a huge collector of oddball sports ephemera, but seeing these bookmarks makes me want to look around a little more to see what's out there. I would have definitely enjoyed these as a kid.

    1. I’ve branched out a bit beyond menko and cards to try to get a more comprehensive catalogue together. When reading was a much bigger deal in the 1950s these certainly would have incentive enough to buy a magazine.

  2. These bookmarks are cool. I collect anything sports related, so if Gwynn or Henderson was featured on a bookmark and I stumbled across it, I'd probably try to add it to my collection.

    1. I’m mostly in the same boat with sumo cards. Couldn’t pass these up seeing as they are almost impossible to find.

  3. Those are really cool! There are some baseball bookmarks out there too, they are one of the things I occasionally search for on Yahoo Auctions but so far haven't come up with any. Nice find!

    1. Thanks. The 1950s magazine inserts are pretty cool. So many more out there that are "undiscovered" or uncatalogued.

    2. I just stumbled across some other vintage sumo bookmarks on YAJ and it made me recall this post, not sure if you've seen these before? https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p736835979

    3. I did see those, pretty interesting and nice grouping of rikishi in the set. Wish they were all one lot.

  4. Were there a lot of sumo bookmarks made back then? Seems like these would be ideal for someone who collects sumo items, if only because you get such a nice big image on them, certainly bigger than you would on a menko/trading card.

    1. There were a small handful of the bookmarks. Definitely not many. They were mainly used as giveaways in kids magazines.
